Mesh WiFi vs a WiFi extender

An extender is fine for one weak room in a small home. For a whole house, or if you want one network name everywhere, get mesh. NETGEAR's own support page says an extender resends your data on the same radio and channel, which can cut the data rate in far rooms by half.
How each one works
An extender listens to your router and repeats it. NETGEAR explains that it receives and sends your data on the same radio and channel, so the data goes over the air twice. It also makes a second network name, so your phone has to switch as you walk around.
A mesh system replaces your router with a set of units that act as one network. NETGEAR describes one router unit plus satellites that all broadcast, with one name and password. The link between units is called backhaul. Better systems give it its own band or a cable, so it does not compete with your devices.

When an extender is enough
- A small home or apartment where the node calculator says 1 or 2.
- One room is weak, and your plan is slow enough that half of it is still plenty. The FCC's household guide puts even heavy use by four devices at a time in its "advanced" tier, which starts above 25 Mbps.
- You want to keep your current router and do not mind a second network name.
When to get mesh
- The calculator says 3 or more nodes.
- More than one floor, or thick walls. See the thick walls guide.
- You pay for a fast plan and want it in far rooms, not just near the router.
- You have Ethernet in the walls. Mesh can use it for wired backhaul. An extender cannot.
One more point: a mesh kit is not an extender for your old router. TP-Link's Deco FAQ says Deco cannot be used in a bridge or extender mode for an existing WiFi network. It can run in access point mode behind a router you keep, over a cable. See the modem and bridge mode guide.
Mesh kits to start with
- TP-Link Deco S4: the simplest step up from an extender on a slower plan. Caveat: WiFi 5, the older standard.
- TP-Link Deco X55: WiFi 6 and three ports per node for most homes. Caveat: no 6 GHz band.
